I bet you have heard that phrase before. The premise is that good food determines good health. ‘Eating healthy will keep you living healthy.' Hmm, that sounds good. In the same vein ‘not eating healthy will keep you not living healthy.' If this is true, we might be safe then to say that, bad food ‘defiles’ one’s health; pollutes one’s being, violates one’s chastity or sullies one’s reputation. Whether good food boosts or bad food diminishes one’s health, as they say, Jesus has a contrary position.
He said, “It is not what goes into the mouth of someone that defiles him/her, but what comes out of the mouth that makes them unclean and defiled” (Mat 15:11). It means that good food is not sufficient to keep you healthy, in the same way, that bad food is not adequately capable of making you unhealthy; since your body excretes what it does not need from the good or bad food you eat (Mat 15:17). So, if as they say, ‘you are what you eat,' what then does Jesus mean?
Desire the Life of God and Live It.
We know, via food science, that the body retains nutrients from whatever you feed it to provide the foundation (of the structure, function, and integrity) of the cells, it needs to live the life God our Father, desires for you. The health; chastity, cleanliness, and reputation of this Godly life, is maintained by what comes out of your mouth because of what is in the heart (Mat 15:18-20). So, what is in your heart?
Do you always feed on the ‘bread of God’ as a lifestyle (Jn 6:33, 48-51,53-55); because it puts things in your mouth that will keep you alive in Christ (Rom 6:11) to live healthily. As they say, Christianity is a confession. What is comes out of your mouth based on what you are feeding your heart? God, our Heavenly Father who loves you eternally. He wants you always to eat well because you are what you eat, indeed, if that food is His Son Jesus; who is, in reality, the bread, drink, and word of life (Jn 1-14, 6:56).
Common, make this bread of life, your favorite food.
